Gary Blumenthal, PhD

  • Postdoctoral Associate

Gary Blumenthal, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Associate at the Rehabilitation and Neural Engineering Labs (RNEL) and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Blumenthal received his Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences at Drexel University in 2021. His doctoral work focused on uncovering the physiological and transcriptional changes that occur in the somatosensory cortex with the development of chronic central neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury, relying on detailed electrophysiological and pain detection techniques. His current work utilizes neural recordings and brain-computer interface to study cortical dynamics of upper-limb movement.

Research Interest Summary

Brain Computer Interfaces, Neuroprosthetics, Sensorimotor Systems, Plasticity, Spinal Cord Injury

Research Interests

Dr. Blumenthal is interested in cortical control of upper-limb movement during context-dependent motor tasks and how sensory information modulates these motor dynamics, with a particular focus on how cortical plasticity may alter sensorimotor communication.
